Report
I dont know if it was just that we were trialling, or the fact that we'd got out of christmas shopping, but everybody
was in good spirits and there was plenty of festive cheer for our first trial at Denton Estate. Even when I had a competitor
withdraw at 6am the morning of the trial I didnt worry, somehow it felt good for a secretary to be ringing up competitors
at stupid o'clock to get a replacement dog. Rod Chapple obliged as he was handling John Gallimore's dog anyway, and by the
time I had got six reserves out of bed, Rod had already put his bitch in the truck just in case, and was on the road.
Gamekeeper Peter Holland had done a first class job ensuring the birds were there for us, the line had only gone 20 yards
and Jeremy Organs bitch was into game, flushing from the light bramble. This was to be the pattern for most of the trial,
a relatively short hunt up in bracken or light bramble, and a find. Often it would be a multiple bird flush with a corresponding
number of retrieves for the dog. There could be no complaints about the number of birds on the ground.I thought we would
finish the trial in the first wood, but the sharp wind made a colder side for the birds, but dogs still found game. Sausage rolls
all round at elevenses, and with plenty of banter flying around, we had a welcome break tucked out of the wind.
Moving on to the next wood dogs were again straight into game. Several birds were flushed and shot. Tommy Cotch's
Marshwood Outlaw was tried on a runner, but made nothing of it, and on 'widening' its search pattern picked a dead bird
out of the area. Rod Chapple was tried on the runner with his bitch Della. She got straight onto scent and took the bird along
the side of the wood and made a nice job of picking it. I couldnt see all the dogs running or retrieving but one of the best
retrieves on the day went to Andy Whitehouse's bitch Doncaster Star. She flushed a woodcock from the wood, and as it broke
the cover it was shot landing about 30 yards out in the rape. The cover was quite thick and I only heard the dog sent,
she came out of the wood and into the rape, to within a few feet of the fall and got her nose down. Scent was weak but she
persevered and picked the bird. A good job for a marked retrieve, except talking to Chris Thurston, apart from the flush the dog
could not have seen the bird in flight and only had the shot to help it, so a very good job indeed. A lot of dogs had a good run,
but andy's dog had two good runs and his consistancy on the day took him to victory, and this win made Doncaster Star
up to Field Trial Champion. Well done Andy.

Trial Report
The day was difficult, with cold biting winds whistling through the Babworth Hall Estate woodland.
The mild weather to date meant the bramble was still quite strong in places, and the dogs had to hit it hard
to make any headway. The last two days colder weather saw the birds deserting the woodland for warmer
drier areas and we struggled to find them. In the first round not all the dogs had a find, and had long bouts of
hunting, but it was the same for everybody, with those that persevered being rewarded. By 12.30pm we had
done three woods and only shot 12 birds, and had not completed the first round. A conference with
the gamekeeper revealed there was no more woodland for us, and it looked like we could lose the trial.
While the discussions went on Mark Whitehouse threw us a lifeline and suggested, that if KC rules allowed
we could move the trial to his shoot nearby. After a call to the KC field trials hotline, and a bit of a discussion,
the decision was that we could move. We drove off in convoy, moving the trial to the Thonock and
Somerby Estate and carried on where we left off. It was very similar brambly woodland, but with more birds.
Still hard work for the competitors but we got the trial completed, with a full set of awards. It worked out
that nearly all of the competitors had a run at each estate, and so nobody gained any advantage, but more
importantly nobody was disadvantaged. It was a tough day for all involved, and not one as secretary I would
like to repeat, but we got it done. Thanks to everybody for sticking in.
